چکیده

This paper describes a dataset of polychaetes (Annelida) from 14 midlittoral rocky shore sampling sites in Greece and Italy (Mediterranean Sea). The dataset combines the outcome of four different projects studying the hard substrate midlittoral zone in the Mediterranean between 1984 and 2009. Samples were collected by scraping and collecting the organisms from a framed area. The maximal sampling depth was 1.5 m. In total, 123 polychaete species were recorded, five of which are new records for the respective biogeographic sectors of the Mediterranean. The dataset contains 788 occurrence records, fully annotated with all required metadata. These data contribute to the knowledge of a previously very understudied regional habitat, since at present, comprehensive lists of the midlittoral communities in the Mediterranean are provided through only a few, paper-based, studies. This dataset is one of the first electronic data compilations of the Mediterranean midlittoral zone communities and certainly the most comprehensive of its kind, contributing to the ongoing efforts of the Ocean Biogeographic Information System (OBIS) which aims at filling the gaps in our current knowledge of the world's oceans. It is accessible at http://ipt.vliz.be/resource.do?r=mediterraneanpolychaetaintertidal.

Distribution pattern of invasive barnacles of Caspian Sea, Amphibalanusimprovisus(Darwin, 1854), in the rocky shores of south Caspian Sea

Barnacles are most important macro benthic population of Rocky shores that Amphibalanusimprovisus is a dominant invasive species of this group. Present study aims to define the number, biomass, coverage rate and to study the factors affecting on the distribution of this species in various parts of rocky shores of south Caspian Sea. Ten sampling stations were selected in the natural and artific...

Grazing by two species of limpets on artificial reefs in the northwest Mediterranean.

The extensive presence of artificial reefs in marine coastal habitats demands a better understanding of the extent to which these structures can be considered surrogates of natural rocky shores for populations of plants and animals. The primary aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that removing limpets from the midlittoral of artificial breakwaters in the northwest Mediterranean led to ...

The study of seaweeds biomass from intertidal rocky shores of Qeshm Island, Persian Gulf

Rocky shores are one of the most important habitats of marine environment in coastal areas. They host marine organisms including seaweeds because of existence of strong and stable substrate for their growths. Intertidal rocky shores are a prominent feature on coastal areas of Qeshm Island located at the northern part of Strait of Hormuz. In order to study biomass of seaweeds on rocky intertidal...

A new proposal for zonation of the midlittoral in the Bay of Koper (Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic) based on macroalgal communities

The general scheme of vertical zonation of organisms of marine hard substrate in the uppermost zones, as suggested by many authors (STEPHENSON & STEPHENSON, 1949, 1972; LEWIS, 1964, 1972; BALLESTEROS & ROMERO, 1988), in principle, corresponds to the scheme of the Mediterranean (PÉRÈS & PICARD, 1964; PÉRÈS, 1967; COPPEJANS, 1974; BELLAN-SANTINI et al., 1994, 2002) and the Adriatic Sea (PÉRÈS & G...

یافته علمی کوتاه: معرفی شکم پایان خانواده Cypraeidae در ناحیه بین جزر و مدی سواحل جنوبی جزیره قشم،خلیج فارس

Gastropod communities were investigated along two intertidal sandy and rocky shores in Qeshm Island, the northern Persian Gulf, IR Iran to identify the species of the family Cypraeidae. Monthly sampling was undertaken from May 2007 to April 2008 by haphazardly placing eighteen 0.25 m2 quadrates along two 30m wide transects located approximately 300m apart, perpendicular to the sea, in each sand...
